Foundation salutes the U.S. Coast Guard at recent dinners: Committee efforts raise more than 2.6 million The Coast Guard Foundation hosted five tribute dinners in the first half of 2007 to honor the brave men and women of the Coast Guard. The events raised more than $2.6 million which will benefit Coast Guard personnel stationed throughout the country. Two more dinners scheduled for later this year, in New York and Miami, will round out the season.
The 5th Annual Tribute to the 14th District of the U.S. Coast Guard held on February 20 in Honolulu was a smashing success again this year. Keynote speaker Sen. Daniel K. Inouye joined 850 attendees to recognize and honor the men and women who serve in Hawaii. The tribute included a stirring video produced by McNeil Wilson Communications. If you would like a copy of the six minute presentation, contact the Foundation office at (860) 535-0786.
Mr. George Blessings, who served in the Coast Guard during World War II, was one of the veterans honored by the dinner in Washington D.C. on June 6. He is joined by Ms. Beverly Kasper.

On March 30, nearly 700 gathered to honor the Coast Guard at the Guardian of the Heartland Awards Dinner in New Orleans. Sen. David Vitter was the keynote speaker. This year, the Foundation honored the crew of CGC Pelican, the boat crew from Station Grand Isle, and the helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans for their rescue response to the research vessel Odyssey Voyager. Thanks to the crew of Pelican, 40 people were saved from the burning Voyager. The survivors abandoned ship into life rafts and the crew of the cutter pulled them to safety.
The 22nd Annual Pacific Area Awards Dinner was held in San Francisco on May 3. The Foundation welcomed Vice Admiral Vivien S. Crea, Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard as its keynote speaker. This year, The Admiral John B. Hayes Award for Unit Excellence went to Air Station Sacramento, which prosecuted and assisted in cases that resulted in the seizure of over 38,000 pounds of cocaine valued at over $340 million. The Admiral James S. Gracey Award for Professional Excellence was presented to BM1 Greg R. Babst, Chetco River who played a crucial role in training six other coxswains at the station and served as a mentor and role model for others. The Admiral Chester R. Bender Award for Heroism went to the Crew of CGMLB 47248, Station Disappointment, who braved 30-foot seas to rescue a disabled 50-foot boat vessel from “the graveyard of the Pacific.”
More than 400 attendees at the Pacific Northwest Awards Dinner in Seattle joined keynote speaker Sen. Maria Cantwell to salute the crew of CG 6022 of Air Station Astoria. They were recognized for their extraordinary teamwork, skill, courage and determination in the face of extremely challenging weather and surf conditions to complete an exceptionally demanding rescue of four survivors.
The 3rd Annual Tribute to the Coast Guard in our Nation's Capital honored the men and women of the Coast Guard who served in World War II. Keynote speaker, Norman Y. Mineta, former Secretary of the Department of Transportation, also served as Dinner Chair this year. The Coast Guard's role in World War II was as diverse as the service itself: from Greenland patrols and amphibious landings to manning Navy transports, rescues, and combat missions. Women also played an important role in the War effort. More than 10,000 women volunteered in the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as SPARs. More than 750 attendees paid tribute to this remarkable generation who served with pride and dedication.

World Premiere of The Guardian Raises $400,000 for Coast Guard Families Directed by Andrew Davis (who directed Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Douglas in A Perfect Murder), the film stars Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. Benefactors walked the red carpet and mingled with stars at a post-premiere party held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. "We’re delighted to have raised over $400,000 from this celebrity event," said Ross Roeder, Chairman of the Coast Guard Foundation. "We’re grateful to those who made the evening a resounding success, especially Walt Disney Studios and its Touchstone and Beacon Pictures partners; Sikorsky Aircraft and its United Technologies parent, who signed on as presenting sponsor of the premiere; General Dynamics, the event’s leading corporate supporter; and all those who came out to support the brave men and women of the Coast Guard." Additional sponsors included Carnival Corporation, Holland-America, HP, L-3 Communications, Maersk Lines and Microsoft. The film was recently released on DVD.

26th Annual Salute to the Coast Guard Raises Over $1 Million; Washington, DC Tribute Achieves Similar Results The Grand Ballroom of the New York Marriott Marquis came alive on October 19th when 900 guests joined in celebrating some of the Coast Guard’s most heroic members. Chaired by John Reinhart, President and CEO of Maersk Lines, the dinner raised over $1 million to support Foundation programs. "This was a spectacular event," said Clay Maitland, a key member of the Steering Committee and generous Foundation benefactor. Behind the scenes, the New York and Washington, DC steering committees engaged in a friendly competition. Thanks to the DC Committee’s hard work, they raised over $1 million at their second annual tribute, challenging the New York Committee to do the same. The DC Dinner was chaired by Governor Thomas Ridge, first Secretary of Homeland Security. Foundation Director Corrine Kosar chaired the Steering Committee and Admiral James Loy served as Master of Ceremonies.
Football Legend Larry Csonka Recounts Alaskan Rescue As a fullback for the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, Larry Csonka (right) was known for his toughness. He needed all that strength when he faced a storm that threatened to capsize his boat in the Bering Sea. His 28-foot boat ran into a squall with gale-force winds, massive swells and driving rain. Petty Officer Paul Roszkowski said the waters were so cold that a person would live for just 15 minutes without survival gear. "We might very well have died if we stayed out there," Mr. Csonka told the audience. "You can imagine my relief when a Coast Guard chopper lifted us to safety." Thanks to the leadership of Dinner Chair James Bowles, President of Conoco Phillips Alaska, and Steering Committee Chair Walter Hickel, Jr., the event was a tremendous success. It raised over $250,000 for programs that benefit Coast Guard members and cadets.
Spirit of Hope Award Presented in Miami Thanks to the hard work of Steering Committee Chair Michael Moore and members of his group, the Foundation’s recent Tribute to the Seventh Coast Guard District raised nearly $400,000. This represents a $100,000 increase over the 2005 dinner. Combined with a generous gift from Dinner Chair Hugh Westbrook and his wife, Carole, the event raised over $500,000. A high point of the November 16th dinner came when Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Thad Allen, presented the Spirit of Hope Award. Established by Bob Hope in 1996, the award is given to the heads of the five armed forces, with the request that they use it to recognize an individual or organization that provides distinguished service to its members. "To have the Foundation’s commitment to the men and women of the Coast Guard acknowledged in this way is truly an honor," said Ross Roeder, Foundation Board Chairman.
