The Foundation sponsors several on-going programs and special projects tailored to meet the ever-pressing needs of Coast Guard people. Here’s a look at some of our most recent projects, made possible through our donors.
Special Projects:
Coast Guard units from around the nation receive recognition at our awards dinners in New Orleans, San Francisco, Honolulu, Washington D.C., New York, Seattle, Anchorage and Miami. See our News Page to read about our most recent award winners.
Air Station Sitka, Alaska, received funds to help build its water-side recreation center. This building gives the men and women who serve there a place to stage birthday, graduation, holiday parties and more.
Station Honolulu: Completed the construction of a picnic pavilion and softball field, enabling the men, women and families stationed there to use them for a variety of occasions — rain or shine.
Group Alameda: Has a refurbished gym floor used by hundreds of Coast Guard people every day.
Station Michigan City: Just built a new fitness center.
Base San Juan: Renovated the Child Development Center and built a playground for 150 children.
All enlisted Coast Guard personnel (more than thirty thousand) receive pre-paid phone cards during the holiday season. These cards allow callers twenty free minutes from anywhere in the world.
Evergreen Fund:
This fund continues to be one of the Foundation’s most successful programs. Health, wellness and recreation projects not funded in the Coast Guard’s budget are addressed through this program, which reaches all nine of the Coast Guard’s national districts. In 2006, $900,000 was disbursed to projects at home as well as to Coast Guard units deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Here’s a sample of Evergreen projects funded:
z distance learning centers aboard the cutters Galveston Island and Kukui;
z kayaks, paddles, cartop carrier, spray skirts, and lifejackets for CGC Orcas, OR;
z paintball gear for CGC Kiska, HI;
z Panasonic 27” TV and DVD player for CGC Clamp, TX;
z spinning bikes for Airstation Sitka, AK;
z CLEP DVDs in Math, English, and Science as well as SAT review tapes for SUP Training Center, NC;

Scholarships:
Scholarship winners have high hopes for the future — “A gift from heaven,” is how one family described the Foundation’s scholarship programs benefiting the children of over 50 enlisted men and women.
The Foundation sponsors seven college scholarship programs…
For dependents of enlisted Coast Guard members:
z The Arnold I. Sobel Scholarship (national)
z The Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship (national)
z The Fallen Heroes Scholarship (international)
For active duty enlisted CG members:
z The Vander Putten Family Scholarships (national)
z Enlisted Education Grants (national)
z Captain Ernest Fox Perpetual Scholarship (local)
z Keiser College Coast Guard Scholarship: Keiser College based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, awards two major scholarships each year to Coast Guard enlisted personnel. The Keiser family initiated the four-year scholarships to honor Regina Keiser’s brother, Roger Mills, a Coast Guard Master Chief at Air Station Houston. The second year winners were Shawna Ward of Livermore, California and Danny Rivera of St. Petersburg, Florida. The Keiser College — Coast Guard Scholarships are valued at $50,000 each. Keiser College’s distance education program enables Rivera and Ward to pursue their degrees even if they are transferred to other stations around the country. Keiser College is also allowing flexibility in the time allotted for degree completion based on deployment and work schedules.
